Stolpersteine in Litomyšl

Stolpersteine, also known in Czech as stones of the disappeared, literally "stones to stumble over", are set in memory of the victims of the Holocaust and the Nazi regime in the sidewalks in front of the entrances of the houses from which these people left for transport.

These are square concrete "paving" blocks with a 12 cm edge. One side has a brass plate engraved with the person's name, date of birth and date of transport.

It was originally the project of German artist Gunter Demnig, who laid the first stone on 16 December 1992 in front of Cologne's town hall. Today we can see the Stones of the Disappeared in the pavement of cities all over Europe, including the Czech Republic.

The laying of the first "Litomyšl" Stones of the Disappeared took place at the beginning of December 2022 as part of the programme to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the first transport of Litomyšl inhabitants of the Jewish faith. A total of sixteen stones laid at five locations in the city centre honour the memory of members of the Bergmann, Stolz, Frey and Sladkus families and Mrs. Emma Bondy.

Organizers have been collecting money from the public since March 2022 to produce these "Litomyšl" stones. Thank you for your support.
